Arnold Toynbee
Arnold Joseph Toynbee was a British historian, affiliated with the Tavistock institute, Foreign Office and Chatham House. He was related to Arnold Toynbee, friend of Alfred Milner. He was professor at London School of Economics of the Fabian Society. He was a delegate at the Paris Peace Conference (transition to world government). He worked with Arthur Balfour. He published A Study in History influenced by Oswald Spengler's Decline of the West. He married Rosalind Murray (Oddfellows family), daughter of Gilbert Murray, president of SPR and Humanists UK. | ![]() |
His son Philip Toynbee worked for The Observer. He was a friend of the Mitford sisters and had an affair with Inez Pearn, wife of MI6 agent Stephen Spender and friend of Marganita Laski, who worked for The Observer and The Brain Trust of BBC and was the niece of Harold Laski of the Fabian Society and Frankfurt School. She later married Charles Madge of the Mass Observation movement with Humpfrey Spender and surrealist David Gascoyne (intermarried with Cecil).
During the 60's he worked for CIA front Esalen.
His granddaughter Polly Toynbee was Vice-president of Humanists UK. She made propaganda for The Guardian and also received an honorary degree of University of Sussex.
