The House of Grimaldi is an elite family, founded 1160 by Grimeldo Canello. Jesuit François/Francesco Grimaldi, nicknamed the Malicious One, was part of the papal Guelph faction who conquered the Rock of Monaco in 1297 and published the first work on diffraction (breaking into pieces) of light and studied gravity through oscillations of a pendulum (gradually reaching equilibrium). The German Saxe-Coburg bloodline, rulers of the UK, Belgium, Portugal, Bulgaria and Mexico, also originated in the Welf/Guelph faction. They ruled Genoa as Doge's with jewish bankers.
